Amid a successful career as a corporate lawyer, Starr Tomczak went to seminary to write Living Well: Inspired by the Story behind the Bible (Cascade Books, 2024). Focused on Genesis through Deuteronomy, Living Well shows how the biblical writers told their stories to help people in ancient times cope with problems like our own. By looking at the stories this way, Starr realized how she overcame humble origins and childhood abuse and avoided debilitating efforts to forgive destructive conduct. To help people relate the stories to their own experiences, Living Well combines personal narrative with Jewish, Christian, and secular views and historical and social science perspectives. Listed in New York Super Lawyers and Who's Who Legal, Starr has a BA from Carleton College, a JD from New York University Law School, and an MDiv from Union Theological Seminary.

 

Starr welcomes opportunities in person and online to talk with religious, professional, student, and book groups. The talks can be tailored for Christian, Jewish, and secular participants. Topics include:

  • The Bible was written for people like us—Learning its historical origins helps us relate it to our lives
  • Surviving child abuse and domestic violence—Inspiration to break away from abuse in the exodus story
  • Forgiveness—When it hinders recovery from trauma and how to set guardrails for safety
  • Overcoming adversity—How redemptive themes of the exodus help us prevail over troubled pasts, broken relationships, economic hardships, and physical difficulties
  • Telling your life story—Overcoming difficulties correlates with well-being and generosity
